Renewable liquid fuels can be produced from municipal solid waste, agricultural residues, and waste lipids through thermochemical, biochemical, and catalytic conversion pathways. This review compares gasification, pyrolysis, hydrothermal liquefaction, transesterification, and hydroprocessing based on feedstock suitability, intermediate products, upgrading requirements, contaminants, and relevant fuel-quality tests. Waste lipids provide relatively direct routes to biodiesel or renewable diesel, whereas heterogeneous solid wastes require extensive pretreatment, gas or liquid cleanup, and downstream upgrading. Water, oxygenated compounds, solids, metals, saturated FAMEs, monoglycerides, and unstable components can adversely affect filterability, cold-flow behavior, storage stability, and combustion performance. Standardized physical and chemical testing is therefore essential for converting variable waste feedstocks into uniform, predictable liquid fuels.
