Real-Time VOC Monitoring and Source Attribution for Refinery Fenceline Compliance Using SIFT-MS

Abstract:
Continuous monitoring of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is increasingly important for refinery emissions management and fenceline compliance. This presentation describes an integrated monitoring framework combining selected ion flow tube mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS), automated calibration, meteorological measurements, and geospatial analysis. Mobile and stationary deployments were used to detect emission events, identify likely source locations, and monitor priority compounds including benzene, toluene, xylenes, ethylbenzene, and ethylene. Refinery field deployments achieved calibration linearity of R^2 >= 0.999 and precision below 3% RSD. Results demonstrate a practical approach for real-time emissions monitoring, source attribution, and environmental reporting.
